Big Stem Moss

(Pleurozium schreberi)

This appears to be a variety of Schreber's Feathermoss or Big Stem Moss, (Pleurozium schreberi).  This moss grows in many places on Quailhaven.  It loves moist damp areas but will tolerate dry periods if not disturbed.  It can be seen growing on trees, dead logs, stumps and on the soil.

Many Oak trees have this moss growing on the bark.  It helps insulate and keep moisture in the tree.  These thick coats represent many years, even decades of grow.  Younger trees seem to have far less.

A tree can be damaged permanently by harvesting this moss.  Some harvest large quantities for short term gain with no regard for the forests health.
