Trees
Pine
Pine trees are a common evergreen in this forest. There are about 115
species of Pines world wide. They can grow in a variety of
environments including
poor soil conditions. Their needles help them to survive in arid
conditions by minimizing evaporation.
The Monterey
Pine in California, Pinus radiata, is seriously threatened by an introduced
fungal disease, Pine Pitch Canker. This has left them very sensitive to dry periods causing a
browning and loss of needles. Another problem in North America are the
Mountain pine beetles. They inhabit the Ponderosa Pine, Lodge-pole
Pine, Scots Pine and Limber Pine. They normally only attack trees under
stress or poor site conditions. If the environment is compromised
or population of the beetles increase they will attack the larger trees.
My belief is
that global warming, water and air pollution are major factors in hurting
this sensitive ecosystem. My hope is we will change our ways and stop the decline before
we only have pictures.
