California Manroot
(Marah fabaceus)
|
California Manroot (Marah fabaceus) is in the family Cucurbitaceae (Gourd family).
Its common names are California Manroot, Big Root and Wild Cucumber.
It is the most common of the species in California.
Its flowers range from yellow, cream or white and are monoecious, both
sexes. Insects spread pollen from the male flowers to the female
flowers.
The fruit, covered in prickles, expand until they
ripen in early summer. They then rupture releasing its large seeds.
This wild flower was found in the eastern section of Quailhaven in partial shade. This
is the only one I have found so far on Quailhaven. It began flowering
about
March 2007.
