Calypso Orchid
(Calypso bulbosa)
|
Calypso Orchid (Calypso bulbosa) is in the family Orchidaceae (Orchid family).
Its common names are Fairy Slipper, Venus's Slipper, Deer's Head Orchid,
Hider-of-the-North or Redwood Orchid.
It favors sheltered areas on conifer forest floors
in cool soils. This was found in a sheltered spot on the forest floor
near a trail. I have seen these it in two separate areas of
Quailhaven. It uses "pollination by deception" to attract bees
to pollinate it. The yellow bristles have no nectar or pollen reward
for the bee.
This species is in decline and is becoming very
rare to find. It does not transplant well because of its mycorrhizal
dependence on specific soil fungi. It is classified as threatened or
endangered in several states and other countries.
