Western Trillium (Trillium ovatum) is in the family Liliaceae (Lily family).
Its common names are Western Trillium, Wake Robin, Western Wake Robin and
Western White Trillium. They have netted-veined leaves unlike the other
Lilies of their family.
The name, Trillium, was given for the groups of
three, associated with this plant. It has three leaves, three petals and
three sepals. Its flowers
can rise 6 inches or 15 cm above the leaves. The petals turn pink as they
age. They like a damp forest floor rich in nitrogen.
Some used to pick the leaves, before they flowered,
and eat them in salads. This would kill the plant and reduce the
population. It takes many years for them to mature, produce seeds and increase
population. They are now
protected in some areas of North America.
This wild flower was found in the eastern section of the property in the shade. They
are very rare on Quailhaven. They began flowering in April 2007.
