The old house,
that the previous owner had built, was in very bad shape. The building was
home to bats and other vermin. Because of the disrepair the building was
torn down. On a rainy day the remains of the structure were burned.
The property had a well that was hand dug by the
previous owner. The remains of a pump and pipes were left but no longer
operable. A water tower had once stood but only the foundation and a pile of
beams remained from that structure.
The property also had a garage that was in fair
condition. The structure was made with pole beams. No 2x4’s were used in its
initial construction. The decision was made to restore it.
The work was done over many months and years of weekend
trips. Electric service was added. The garage section was retained for
storage of an old 1930’s car.
The other half became sleeping quarters and a small
kitchen. A fireplace was added to the small space. The hand dug shallow well
was restored with an electric pump, pressure tank, underground electric
wires and water line to service the cabin.
Also an old fashion “Out House” was constructed much
like it was 150 years ago on rural farms.
Over the years the dream of a flush toilet became a
reality in a larger cabin. During the summer months the hand dug shallow
well did not provide water so a new deep well was added.
A larger but still modest cabin was constructed. A
septic tank was added. The electric service was converted to underground for
all the property.
Both cabins became a summer and winter weekend
retreats, from city life, for many guests. They are still in use
today.
