Birds
Owl
On many summer
evenings the sounds of the Owls are heard. I saw some flying under the
trees. Were they the California Spotted Owls? I don't know.
One evening I shined my flashlight into the trees to confirm the sounds I
was hearing. There were owls perched in the trees around the cabin,
maybe even the spotted owls. After that I tried not to disturb them.
I was the intruder in their home and I wanted them to know they had a safe
haven.
Typical owls, (Strigidae) which family covers a
wide variety of species, almost 200, including several varieties of spotted
owls. Spotted Owls, (Strix occidentalis), are in this
area. Barn owls, (Tytonidae), are also possible but are more likely in a field
setting.
Spotted owls prefer a forest setting according to my research
and I believe that is what I saw. I haven't seen them this winter but
look forward to recording there songs this spring and summer. More
research is needed for owls in Northern California.
