Quailhaven has quail, California
Quail - Callipepla californica, as the name says. My quail encounters are
not as spectacular compared to my Mom’s quail encounter, but here it is.
I don’t know what it is about the cabin and quail but
they do like to hang out under and around the front porch. It was a very
cold day and perhaps it is warmer under there but I stepped outside, not
hearing them from inside, and away they went. I was startled by their quick
take off but also curious about why they were there.
About a month later on another cold day I was coming
back to the cabin and heard little sounds coming from the front of the
cabin. I saw about six to ten quail around the front porch. They did spot me
but were not startled. They did keep a wary eye out at me. I stood and
watched them for about five to ten minutes as they fed on bugs I guess.
Because of the cold I had to go inside, so I walked slowly toward
them. They began to scurry off, as I got closer.
During the summer I have heard and seen
them in the forest as they feed. They would hide and move in the bushes away
from predators.
They also are
seen frequently on the main entrance road. I will see them scurry
toward the bushes next to the road as I drive by.
