California Raven
(Corvus corax)
|
Quailhaven is home to Ravens. The California
Raven is different in genetics, DNA, compared to the Common Raven, Corvus
corax. Most of my Internet research found the Common Raven. See
the links below for more details and the differences. The
Sciencedaily.com link has the details about the California Raven. The
original report came from the USGS.
In a large fir tree called Fangorn there is a nest. This nest is near the top of the tree. Ravens seem to like perching at the
tops of the tallest trees as they soar from tree to tree. Quailhaven is one
of their favorite areas to be in.
During the day they call to each other in a series of
sounds and repeat those sounds over and over again till they get a response
from other Ravens. They seem to have many vocalizations as they talk to each
other.
I commonly see and hear them all day long in some part
of the valley soaring or calling out to each other. They have a watchful eye
on everyone below looking for their next meal of a small or medium sized
mammal.
