Wild Turkeys
(Meleagris gallopavo)
|
Quailhaven has Wild Turkeys. They are often
seen searching for food in the field or walking in various parts of the
forest. The new garden area has been a favorite rest stop during the
summer. They love the loose dirt. You can see them take a dust
baths as small dust clouds rise.
Watching
several mothers, with their young following close behind, is great
entertainment. The young turkeys learn where to find food from there
parents as they follow almost the same routes every time. The parents
keep a watchful eye as the young chase bugs with great enthusiasm.
When approached they will walk or fly off depending on how serious they
perceive the danger.
Seeing the males fan dance is also an amazing
sight. He makes himself as big as possible and then turns to attract
his harem. I have found some who gobble as I called to them.
They sound like they are laughing as they make a warbling, gobble, call.
