Bat

(Chiroptera)

When I first came to Quailhaven almost every old building had bats living in them.  They would come out at night looking for insects to eat.  We would play Frisbee in the field at dusk and the bats would swoop at the disk.

Today, decades later, bats are still here.  Lights on the buildings attract moths and other insects so the bats come out to feed.  They will fly through the open porch to catch insects near the light.  When I come onto the porch they swoop past me.

Bats play an important role in keeping the insect population in check.  They live in the near by dead hollow trees that have been left for habitat in the forest.

There are 27 species, so far, of bats living in California.   According to my research, the species common in this forest setting are:

California Bat

(Myotis californicus)

Long-eared myotis

(Myotis evotis)

Silver-haired bat

(Lasionycteris noctivagans)

Little brown bat

(Myotis lucifugus)
