Bat
When I first came to Quailhaven almost every old
building had bats living in them. They would come out at night looking
for insects to eat. We would play Frisbee in the field at dusk and the
bats would swoop at the disk.
Today, decades
later, bats are still here. Lights on the buildings attract moths and
other insects so the bats come out to feed. They will fly through the
open porch to catch insects near the light. When I come onto the porch
they swoop past me.
Bats play an
important role in keeping the insect population in check. They live in
the near by dead hollow trees that have been left for habitat in the forest.
There are 27
species, so far, of bats living in California. According to my
research, the species common in this forest setting are:
