Beavers, (Castor canadensis), have been seen on Quailhaven. One morning, as I
was walking beside the big creek in late October, I saw two beavers coming
up stream. They were big creatures, between 70 to 100 pounds, so I
kept my distance.
They continued up steam and then went up a smaller
creek channel. After going about 100 feet up the channel they turned
around and went back to the big creek. They then continued down stream
and out of sight.
I later went down the creek to examine the area for
evidence that the beavers might live on Quailhaven but found no evidence.
A neighbor, down stream, has a pond where the beavers might live.
Because of the size of these animals I do not believe
they were Mountain Beavers, Aplodontia rufa). They are much smaller.
These were easily 70 to 100 pounds, which is the range for mature fat
beavers.
