Black-Tailed Deer
(Odocoileus hemionus columbianus)
|
There
are many deer that come into and live in Quailhaven. At night I hear
them eating acorns under the Oak trees. During the day if you remain
quiet you will see them come from the meadow and pass by the cabins.
At dusk and early morning they are most abundant
enjoying the cover of darkness. The grass in the meadow is also a favorite
hang out and their tracks can be seen in this area regularly.
Deer do stay in groups and move from area to area,
avoiding people. If startled, they leap away at amazing speed.
There are many deer trails in Quailhaven and they are
well used. There is a variety of food for them year round and water can be
found in pools and ponds in the creek in the driest months.
My research has found that the deer here are a
subspecies of mule deer known as black-tailed deer, Odocoileus hemionus
columbianus. Their tracks are not confirmed yet but they are the most common
species in the area.
