Gray Squirrel
(Sciurus griseus)
|
The Gray Squirrels are found all over Quailhaven.
They are the only variety of squirrels we have seen. Two families live
near the cabins, at last count, and are seen regularly.
They are determined to gather acorns and other food for
the winter months. They will store their food in many places. They
bury them in the ground, in trees, in buildings or any place they feel safe
entering or crawling on.
These squirrels are very at home in the trees. They
will scavenge on the ground but if they see danger will climb the nearest
tree and cross in mid air if needed to the next tree branch. It’s as if they
have their own squirrel highway up there. They regularly use the same routes
to move in the trees.
They also make their own sounds if they see danger,
warning other squirrels to potential threats. They also seem jittery as they
flick their tails and feet.
Watching one eat an acorn is fascinating to watch. Their dexterity in using their paws, in eating, makes you think they have
hands like a human.
