Quailhaven has lizards. The most common is the Western Fence
Lizard, (Sceloporus occidentalis). Their other common names are Blue
bellies or Swifts. These lizards like being up high, like wood piles
or fence posts. They have the ability to change colors, to blend into
their surroundings. They love doing push ups for some reason.
The young lizards also like to chase each other. It is great fun to
watch them chase each other on a tarp.
Another benefit of the Western Fence Lizard is a
lower rate of Lyme disease in the area because of there presence.
Something in there bodies kills the disease in ticks that feed on the
lizards.
Also found here is the Alligator Lizard, (Elgaria
multicarinata multicarinata), a California native. This lizard is
harder to find and likes being hidden. They love wood piles and
underground holes. Keep an eye out for their shed skin. You may
find a lizard near by.
