Western Pond Turtle
(Clemmys marmorata)
|
One afternoon,
in early June 2005, as I walked from the cabin up the driveway I saw a turtle.
I was shocked to see one here at Quailhaven. In all the years people
have been coming here we have never seen one. It was about seven
inches long and about 4 inches wide. The turtle was all tucked up in
its shell. I walked back to the cabin and grabbed the camera and took
some pictures of my shy friend.
My plans for
the day were on hold. I wanted to find out where this turtle would go.
So I went and got a chair and sat at a distance and observed my new friend.
It became clear that my presence was stopping the action. So I moved
my chair to a far distance away. I then needed binoculars to see my
friend. I waited a long while but this turtle was not going
anywhere. I then went to a different area in hopes this turtle would
not be disturbed by my presence.
After checking
back from a distance the turtle moved on toward the creek.
This turtle has been identified as a Western Pond Turtle, (Clemmys marmorata),
which is a common turtle for this area of Northern California and north.
