Lungwort

(Lobaria pulmonaria)

Click for Large Image     Lungwort, or sometimes called lung lichen, is seen growing is a variety of different places on Quailhaven.  It likes cool damp conditions but dries up in summer months.

Species of Lobaria growing is a good health indicator of the forest and an undisturbed ecosystem.  Another benefit is that it helps fix nitrogen from the air.  It does not like air pollution so its presence is reassuring.  It is however an endanger species in many parts of the world.

Lobaria pulmonaria has been used as a medicine to treat various respiratory aliments.  It may have some mild antibiotic properties.
