Black Elfin Saddle
Black Elfin Saddle
(Helvella lacunosa)
|
Helvella lacunosa has a common name of Black Elfin Saddle. It is
similar to Gyromitra esculenta which is poisonous and known as a false
morel. Both have dark black colors, look foreboding and unappetizing.
Helvella
lacunosa is said to be edible but some experts don't recommend it.
There appear to be differences in the stem and top section of Helvella
lacunosa and Gyromitra esculenta.
This was found
under a conifer tree on a recently created trail. Helvella lacunosa
commonly grows in Western North America in a variety of conditions.
Some are found growing under Pine trees in the soil. Others are found
growing on rotting wood. They can be seen in conifer or mixed forests
like Quailhaven.
Note: The photo
identification is not confirmed.
