Bracket Fungi
(bracket
polypores)
|
There are various types of Bracket Fungi or Conk,
(bracket
polypores). I believe I have
identified picture one as the following but not confirmed it.
Common
Name: Artist's Conk, Shelf Fungus, Tree Tongue, Kofukitake.
Scientific
Name: Ganoderma applanatum.
The name Artist's
Conk refers to the underside, the white bottom. When scratched,
injured, the mark will turn brown. A good artist can make a beautiful
drawing on these fungi.
Picture one was found on a dead pine tree that fell during the winter. The
top side was bitten. Notice the tooth marks on the front side. There are types of
Conk that have shown
antimicrobial properties.
Some native
peoples use this as a tea to heal sick conditions in the mouth, throat and
on down. Some
burn a little piece for purification in ceremony.
The Second picture appears to be Turkey Tail
(Trametes versicolor). Its rings are a very distinctive feature of
this bracket fungi. It also has
antimicrobial properties. Some research say it may be a cure for some
cancers.
Note: The photo
identification of these pictures is not confirmed.
