Indian Warrior
(Pedicularis densiflora)
|
Pedicularis densiflora has the common name of Indian Warrior. It is part
of the broomrape family, (Orobanchaceae). It is a facultative
parasite, or hemiparasite. It can choose to obtain its nutrients and
water from the roots of other plants or not. If it has the opportunity
it will be a parasite. It is very hard to cultivate and is a rare
perennial herb.
This native wild flower was found near the main
road in partial shade under a manzanita. There are very few of these
flowers on the property. They began appearing in mid March and started
to flower in April.
The buds of the Indian Warrior are medicinal herbs
that native peoples used for medicine and ceremony.
Because this is a very rare flower, and very hard to
cultivate, please do not pick them. Leave them to the wildlife who need
them for a food source and medicine.
Note: The photo
identification is not confirmed.
