The Naming of
Fangorn
Fangorn -Treebeard - Ents
and the
Forest of Mirkwood
From Book 2 of:
The Lord of the Rings
By J. R. R. Tolkien
Mother, Daddy and I had really enjoyed Tolkien’s books. When the logging was done on Quailhaven, clear cutting was no longer
allowed. Several large seed trees had to be left to re-seed the area.
Right in the middle of the property they left a huge
fir tree. It looked like it was the “boss” tree of the whole property.
Mother and Daddy named it Fangorn, after the Ent that lived in Mirkwood
Forest in Tolkien’s book. He was a good and benevolent Ent that took care of
the Ents and other trees.
Ents were like trees but not rooted into the ground and
could walk around. His other name was Treebeard because of long
hanging lichen,
Old Man's Beard, that hung down like a beard.
Ents are also described in Tolkien’s book The Hobbit.
