Old Man's Beard
Old Man's Beard
(Usnea hirta)
|
Old Man's Beard is seen on many trees in this forest. Plants and
bushes below those trees have this lichen hanging from them. I see it most often in older trees.
I'm still doing
research on lichen but I believe that it may be beneficial to the tree.
Varieties of Usnea have been beneficial as a medicine for humans.
Some have shown antibiotic properties. There may be similar benefits
to the wildlife and the trees they grow on.
The fir tree
named
Fangorn has Old Man's
Beard, Lichen, hanging from its branches. This feature is what
inspired the name.
