Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Kilauea Volcano is the most active volcano on earth. It is
impossible to predict what sort of show may be in store for
you when you visit. There may be lava hissing into the sea
at some underground location, or the caldera may be spitting
glowing lava and the earth beneath youy may rumble and
groan. This park has not only the ever changing volcano, but
miles of rain forest hiking trails. Hale Mahinui is three miles
from the park entrance, so no long drive back after you hike.

This is the caldera of Kilauea Volcano in mid May 2002. The volcano has been in an active cycle since 1983, with lava flows from vents on the other side of the mountain periodically flowing into the ocean. You can readily view the awesome power of this mountain from both inside the park, and from locations in other parts of the island where lava has covered the road and altered the landscape significantly.

See the official Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Web site for more information.
